What is a therapeutic space suit?

This suit is a special jacket made of flexible and stretchable materials, and contains a network of bands and straps that provide support and directed pressure to the body. Its idea is based on providing support and push to the muscles and joints, which helps improve movement, posture and muscle strengthening, as it supports the child's body and helps him move in a healthy way.

Space suit components

  • Top: Covers the upper body from head to waist, and has adjustable straps and ties to provide support for the head, shoulders and upper body.
  • Bottom: Covers the lower body from waist to feet, and has straps and ties to provide support for the hip, knee and ankle.
  • Bands and Straps: A network of elastic bands and straps that provide support and targeted compression to the body.
  • Fabrics: The suit is made of special fabrics that are flexible and breathable, allowing freedom of movement.

Conditions that benefit from intensive physical therapy:

  1. Cerebral palsy: A neurological disorder that affects movement and coordination.
  2. Delayed motor development: When a child does not acquire motor skills in a timely manner.
  3. Birth injuries: such as bone fractures or nerve injuries.
  4. Neuromuscular diseases: such as spinal muscular atrophy.
  5. Functional disorders: such as Tourette syndrome or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

How does a space suit work?

  • Support and Stabilization: The straps and bands in the suit help stabilize joints and provide support for weak muscles, allowing the child to move with more control.
  • Resistance: The suit provides gentle resistance to baby's movement, helping to strengthen muscles and develop correct motor patterns.
  • Proprioception: The pressures exerted by the suit help stimulate proprioception in the body, enhancing body awareness and movement.
  • Feedback: The suit provides constant feedback to the child on how to move their body, helping them learn correct movement patterns.

Benefits of using a therapeutic suit

  • Improves movement, posture and coordination: The suit helps improve range of motion and reduce muscle tension.
  • Muscle strengthening: The suit provides resistance to the muscles during movement, which helps to strengthen them and increase their endurance.
  • Improve balance and coordination: The suit helps improve the sense of balance and body control.
  • Accelerate learning: The suit helps accelerate learning of new motor skills.
  • Increased self-confidence: Improved movement and daily functions help boost a child's self-confidence.
  • Fast results: A significant improvement in the child's condition can be observed after a short period of treatment.
  • Increased participation: The suit encourages the child to actively participate in therapy sessions.
  • Safety: The suit provides the necessary support for the child and reduces the risk of injury.
  • Flexibility: The suit can be adapted to fit each child's needs.

rubber band effect

  1. Muscle strengthening: The elastic bands add an additional load of 15-40 kg, which helps the cerebral palsy patient to strengthen the muscles in resisting gravity.
  2. Improve hand and breathing functions: Upper limb elastic bands strengthen the muscles responsible for extending the upper limbs and improve breathing and speech functions.

Types of exercises in a physiotherapy session using a suit:

  1. Muscle strengthening exercises.
  2. Sitting and standing exercises.
  3. Balance improvement exercises.

Important Notes

  • The spacesuit is a tool, not a magic bullet. It should be combined with a comprehensive treatment program that includes traditional physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other therapeutic interventions.
  • The spacesuit must be selected, adjusted and applied by a qualified physical therapist.
  • Not all children need a spacesuit, and each case must be evaluated individually to determine suitability.
  • The duration of the session in the therapeutic suit varies from one child to another and ranges from 90 to 150 minutes depending on the child’s abilities.
